A new pair of shoes causes an open blister on your foot. For most, changing shoes and a bandage will solve the problem. But, for the millions of Americans whose natural healing process is hampered by poor blood circulation, diabetes or other causes, a simple blister may result in a chronic open sore, serious infection, gangrene and even amputation.

The new Wound Care Center® program at Mercy Health System of Northwest Arkansas, opened on September 22, 2004 offers a unique comprehensive therapy for treating chronic non-healing wounds in the northwest Arkansas area. Nearly six million Americans suffer with chronic open sores as a result of diabetes, pressure ulcers or circulatory problems. Since 1988, more than 425,000 patients have received treatment at over 90 affiliated Wound Care Centers nationwide.

Patients at the Center are evaluated to determine any underlying condition, such as diabetes or poor circulation that might inhibit the natural healing process. After the assessment, an individualized treatment program is planned. Patients are informed how to care for their wounds at home and advised of nutrition and exercises that might aid the healing process and prevent future wounds. Patients with wounds on their feet are advised how to protect their feet and walk correctly. Special shoes, which protect the feet and relieve pressure, may also be prescribed.

For more information about the comprehensive treatment at the Mercy Wound Care Center®, call 479-878-2550. Mercy Wound Care Center® is part of a national Wound Care Center network operated by Curative Health Services. Wound Care Center programs offer comprehensive, interdisciplinary wound management through individualized, aggressive treatment programs.
